Self labeled as a ‘Freeman on the Land’ Daniel Whitton (32) of Cheshire has refused to pay his Council Tax and would rather go to prison as a protest to raise the awareness of Personal Carbon Trading as proposed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

“It’s not that I can’t pay, I won’t pay” stated Daniel. “I have been to see my local MP Mike Hall, telephoned, emailed and visited all of my local Councillors.
Been a delegate at a Climate 2050 ‘democratic’ meeting where I was denied my freedom of speech and driven out of the meeting, and attended a Local Council Meeting where my questions were refused as ‘not debatable’.

Each citizen would be given 4000 carbon credits (1 Credit = 1kg of carbon)
Every time you bought fuel at a petrol station, paid home energy bills or booked travel tickets, you would have to pay a certain number of credits from your carbon allowance (on top of the financial cost of your purchase)
40% of the national carbon budget would be allocated to the public. The remaining 60% would be auctioned off to be sold in a ‘carbon market’, for example to banks and other financial institutions, who would trade in carbon credits
The funds from this auction would allow the government to reduce the level of taxes in the economy
If you needed to buy extra credits or sell left-over credits you could buy them from this carbon market
The price of one credit would vary according to the market (in the same way that exchange rates for foreign currency vary).
“Therefore if citizens want more they have to buy them off banks and private companies and, as stated, the price of a carbon credit will depend on the manipulation of the markets. This, on top of the price we pay right now for everything.”
“Page 30 States that those on benefits may not be entitled to purchase basic things like food heating and petrol in 2013:
4.36 People on benefits were also identified as a group who should not necessarily be eligible for a carbon allowance………….................
…………..participants thought that people on benefits already receive enough help from the State as it is, and might not be responsible enough to manage their own allowance.
“Who can say that they will still have a job in 4 years?”
Daniel refers back to his refusal to pay his Council Tax:
“Our Constitution states that the Council needs to: Represent ward interests by providing a voice for all sectors of the community; Promote the principles of equality tolerance and local democracy in local communities.”
“They are clearly not providing this service and are not looking after the future interests of the community – I will therefore not pay for a service that is not being provided”.
“Sometimes when you stand up you are seen as acting Illegitimately, unfortunately I cannot wait to be given legitimacy, I must legitimize myself.”
